How to Get to Rovinj and What to See – My Travel Guide

Let me tell you someting, let me tell you something—Rovinj completely stole my heart. I wasn’t sure what to expect before visiting, but from the moment I stepped into this colorful coastal town, I knew it was special. The charming cobbled streets, Venetian-style buildings, and breathtaking Adriatic views make Rovinj one of the most beautiful destinations in Croatia.

If you’re planning a trip to Rovinj, I’ve got you covered. I’ll share how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and some personal tips to make your trip unforgettable.

How to Get to Rovinj

Rovinj is well-connected, and getting there is pretty easy whether you’re driving, taking a bus, or flying in. Here are your best options:

By Car

Driving is the most flexible way to travel, especially if you want to explore more of Istria. I drove from Belgrade, which is about 650 km (7 hours) away. If you’re coming from Zagreb, the drive is only 3 hours (250 km). The roads are well-maintained, and the views along the way are stunning.

By Bus

If you don’t feel like driving, buses from Zagreb, Pula, and Rijeka run frequently. The Rovinj Bus Station is near the town center, so getting around after arriving is simple.

By Plane

The nearest airport is Pula Airport (PUY), just 40 minutes away. From there, you can reach Rovinj by:

  • Shuttle bus – Cheap and convenient.
  • Taxi – Costs around €50-€70 (pricey).
  • Car rental – The best option if you plan to explore Istria.

💡 Tip: If flights to Pula are too expensive, check flights to Zagreb, Venice, or Ljubljana and take a bus or rental car to Rovinj.

Where to Stay in Rovinj

Finding the right accommodation in Rovinj depends on your travel style and budget. Here’s what I found:

  • Old Town – Perfect for an authentic experience, but can be noisy at night.
  • Outside the center – More affordable and peaceful, great for families.
  • Beachfront resorts – Ideal if you want a seaside retreat.
  • Camping sites – Rovinj has some of Croatia’s best campsites, perfect for nature lovers.

💡 Personal Tip: If you're traveling in peak season (July-August), book early! Prices skyrocket, and places fill up fast.

Best Things to Do in Rovinj

Rovinj is full of things to see and do, but here are my absolute musts:

1. Get Lost in the Old Town

Rovinj’s Old Town is a maze of narrow stone streets that feel like something out of a Venetian fairy tale. Every street is Instagram-worthy, with colorful facades, hidden courtyards, and stunning sea views.

2. Climb St. Euphemia’s Bell Tower

For the best view of Rovinj, head to St. Euphemia’s Church. The bell tower is 60 meters high, and the panoramic view from the top is worth the climb. The entrance is free, but climbing the tower costs €4.

3. Relax on Rovinj’s Best Beaches

I’m a beach person, and Rovinj has some of the best beaches in Croatia. Here are my favorites:

  • Balota Beach – Rocky but super scenic and peaceful.
  • Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape) – Great for swimming, cycling, and hiking.
  • Lone Bay – Calm waters, perfect for families and snorkelers.

💡 Tip: Rovinj’s beaches are mostly rocky, so don't forget to bring those ugly but comfy water shoes if you are not used to walking on rocks.

4. Stroll Along the Harbor & Waterfront

I loved walking along Rovinj’s fishing harbor, where you can watch the boats and soak in the views. Sunset here is magical, so grab a drink at a seaside café and enjoy the moment.

5. Explore Grisia Street – Rovinj’s Art Street

If you love art, Grisia Street is a must. It’s filled with local artists, craft shops, and galleries, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir.

6. Visit the Local Market

I always check out local markets when I travel. Rovinj’s Green Market is the place to find fresh produce, Istrian truffles, homemade olive oil, and Croatian wines.

Getting Around Rovinj

Rovinj is best explored on foot, but if you want to visit nearby towns, here are your options:

  • Bike rental – Cheap and perfect for exploring Zlatni Rt.
  • Public bus – Connects Rovinj to other Istrian towns.
  • Car rental – Best for day trips to Pula, Motovun, or Poreč.

💡 Tip: Avoid taxis—they’re crazy expensive! A short ride can cost €40 for just a few kilometers.

Best Day Trips from Rovinj

If you have extra time, check out these awesome day trips from Rovinj:

  • 🚢 Red Island15 minutes by boat, perfect for a beach escape.
  • 🏛 Pula – Visit the famous Roman amphitheater, one of the best-preserved in the world.
  • 🌋 Hike Vesuvius & Pompeii – If coming from Naples, this is a must-see.
  • 🍷 Istrian Wine Roads – Taste amazing local wines in Motovun & Grožnjan.

Best Time to Visit Rovinj

I visited Rovinj in September, and it was perfect—great weather, fewer tourists, and cheaper prices. Here’s what you should know:

  • Summer (July-August) – Hot, crowded, and expensive.
  • Spring & Fall – Best for sightseeing, hiking, and relaxed vibes.
  • Winter (December-February) – Cozy and quiet, with a charming holiday atmosphere.

💡 Tip: If you want to swim but hate crowds, go in early September—the sea is still warm, but most tourists have left.

Why Rovinj Stole My Heart

Rovinj is one of the most charming places in Croatia, and I completely fell in love with its laid-back Mediterranean vibe, incredible food, and stunning coastal views. Whether you’re exploring the Old Town, hiking through nature parks, or just sipping coffee by the sea, Rovinj will leave you enchanted.

I hope this guide helps you plan your trip and experience the magic of Rovinj like I did. Safe travels and enjoy!
